Howard's sweater

This is a very small part of Howard's life. In 1971-2 I was part of a dozen teachers that tried to start an academic school at the Cedu Foundation in Running Springs, CA. Those who know of this brief part of Howard's life may rue the mention of Cedu, but Howard gave a good account as the nominal head of the academic program in what was one of the country's first residential treatment programs. We failed as we tried to bring non-structured education to kids who needed structure.
We guys were all enamored of Howard's companion, Marie (sigh). One morning, Howard and Marie were driving into the lodge as I was driving out and they waved me to a stop. Howard excitedly leaned out the window of his car and offered me my choice of two sweaters. Marie sat stone faced in the seat next to him. Whatever had transpired between him and Marie, I don't know but Howard said he couldn't keep the sweaters that his first wife had knitted for him. I inherited this beautiful white cardigan that wrapped around my neck. Tonight I washed it again and thought of Howard, googled his name and discovered his life.
Such a crazy place, Cedu. But some wonderful folks there. RIP Howard and best to those who knew him better. Brian Hernon, Lancaster, PA
