Howard the bookseller

My professional career as an antiquarian bookseller was marked with getting to know the local booksellers. I worked for Jake Zeitlin, but soon I was visiting bookstores such as Dawson’s on Larchmont, Heritage (then on La Cienega), Karmiole’s, Spellman, Hennesy & Ingalls, George Houle and Howard Karno’s. It was from Howard that I always enjoyed a warm relationship that was welcoming from his heart right from the start. Howard gave me a copy of Armand Coppens’ The Memoirs of an Erotic Bookseller. From that book I judged that Howard was a true romantic at heart! He was absolutely unique: my eye was drawn to the wonderfully colored Mexican sculptures around the store and then at his home. I remember going to gatherings at the home and enjoying company, seeing some more books and laughing while having a good time. While Beverly was in the home and store all was brightened and joyful. I always regretted seeing Bev and Howard leave for Valley Center, but Linda and I visited, becoming my first visit to VC! What I didn’t know was that years later I would come again with my Mahshid and we were thrilled to see Beverly & Howard again, take in the avocadoes, smell the orange blossoms, and enjoy the natural surrounding area that Valley Center offers. We nearly bought a home there. I did go into an escrow, but it didn’t work out at that time. But just last week Mahshid and I bought a home in Escondido and we became book-neighbors! I still have the book that Howard inscribed to me. Howard meant a lot of me as a mentor in the profession of antiquarian bookselling, of being a specialist dealer, an authority in Latin Americana, of being appreciative of art, women and good times. We enjoyed many good times. With much love for dear Howard from us both, Mahshid & Jeff
